Dying my hair a crazy color became a bucket list goal when, on Friday, March 28, 2014, I got a call from my doctor telling me that I had Stage 1 Cervical Cancer and would be going in for urgent surgery just four days later (on April 1, 2014).
I had been in for my annual check-up, was told that it came back abnormal and required a colposcopy (a biopsy of the cervix) to see just how abnormal it actually was - but I was assured that it was most likely NOT cancer as my annuals have always come back clean. I had been patiently waiting for the test results for a little over a week. It was on Friday, in the late afternoon, as I was sitting at work that I got the call. In all honesty, once I heard the C word, I shut down. I don't remember much of anything my doctor said. I was calm throughout the conversation and remained calm for about 5 minutes - seemed like eternity - before finally breaking down. My co-workers knew before my family...soon, everyone close to me knew.
I immediately vowed to kick cancer in the rear. In no way was I going to leave my two kids motherless. I mean, I was only 35 years old - my babies only 15 and 9! I'm a fighter...I'm a survivor! I knew I may have a battle ahead of me but I was ready, boxing gloves and all. The morning of my surgery, I told my family and friends that if they were successful in removing my cancer and I was able to actually keep my hair, that I was going to dye it teal! **Teal is the color of the Cervical Cancer Awareness ribbon.**
Needless to say, I kicked cancers booty fast and hard - KO in the 1st round! Hence the teal hair!
Now I live every day to the fullest with my two kids...every day!
Note - my bestie dyed strips of her hair teal as well!
