I recently earnt my PADI open water scuba diving license at BANS diving school in Koh Tao. It was a fabulous experience, 3.5 days of theory + a pool dive + 4 open water dives. At first I panicked when I hit the ocean, but after some calming words from the instructor I relaxed (so important in scuba diving!!) and went down to 18m. Absolutely LOVED the experience and its quite additive! Koh Tao is also a beautiful island surrounded with cheap bars and restaurants and massages!!
