Absinthe has been portrayed as a dangerously addictive psychoactive drug. The chemical thujone, present in small quantities, was blamed for its alleged harmful effects. By 1915, absinthe had been banned in the United States and in most European countries. Although absinthe was vilified, no evidence has shown that it is any more dangerous than ordinary spirits. Its psychoactive properties, apart from those of alcohol, have been much exaggerated.

Say, it turns out you can find "bars serving absinthe" in your city by searching in yelp.com.  I found 3 in my city and plan to stop the next time I am sans child.  wooHOO!

The drug comes from the casks that they age it in. The casks are made of wormwood, which secretes the drug into the absinthe. Depending on how long you age it, depends on how potent and how much of a "high" you will get.

I have bought and drunk it in France. Beautiful!

Tastes a little like licorice. They sell it in the the liquor stores now. Guess its not as dangerous as they thought!

My grandparents still makes their own :) They have a licence authorizing home distillation (it was a privilege you could inherit from your parents but it stopped in 1959 in France).

It's great if you can try it the 'traditional' way, with the sugar on the spoon!
