When I was 15 I wrote a bucketlist somewhere. It was a "in the next 5 years" thing. I don't remember what was on it except for one goal: to go on a cruise. I thought it would be grand to float around the ocean in the sun with a pool on deck and all the rest. Now though, I couldn't see the appeal of spending a week on an isolated floating hotel. However, I did take an overnight cruise from Stockholm in Sweden, to Tallinn in Estonia with my friend Adam in July this year, and it was kinda fun...
We had a healthy dinner.
We drank a lot of wine. I accidently locked Adam out of the room and he spent the whole night making friends with Russians and Estonians who were fighting amongst themselves, but thought he was tops.
The next day we got to Tallinn and we were so hungover. We slept through the arrival to shore. "We'll just sleep for another hour, then we'll get off". We dragged ourselves off the boat. I'm pretty sure we were still wearing the same clothes because we had no concept of time. It was raining on shore. We were miserable. We had a look around.
There was a garden festival on. We saw some of the architecture. To be honest, we had no idea what the 'things to do' in Tallinn were. We tried to contact the girl we'd made friends with on the boat. She was busy and didn't offer us any advice. We got food. So good. That black stuff is garlic bread. It was so delicious
We decided that our adventure was really all about the cruise and that we hadn't come for the tourism. We spent about 20 minutes convincing ourselves of this. We went back to the boat about 2 hours after we'd left it. We slept until 6 or 7, and were up in time to see the sun set. It was absolutely beautiful. Everyone should see the sun set over the Baltic in their life!
We had another healthy dinner and started it all over again.
It was kind of what I imagined a cruise to be. Though less hotel on a boat and more night club. With the bonus of tax free alcohol. We drank, we talked shit, we danced some more. We stumbled to bed at some ungodly hour.
It's not something I have high on my list of things to do again. For one, my liver couldn't handle it. But it's not the type of travel that excites me.
