In 1996 I travelled to Costa Rica with a high school class for a biology field trip.  Among the sites we visited was Mt. Arenal, an active volcano.  Few experiences in life are truly as awesome as feeling the mountain beneath your feet trembled from the explosions deep underground.

Awesome! Did you die? :)

Gilbert Wilson on Jun 18, 2010

Nope. But, a friend tape recorded with a dictaphone and it provides undeniable evidence that we used naughty words and pooped our pants.

Actually erupting?!?! Or active?

Gilbert Wilson on Nov 06, 2010

@Claire. It was erupting; not like Mt. St. Helen Apocalyptic, but actively making explosion sounds and shaking the earth.

I just visited that volcano! Unfortunately it was a cruddy day and we couldn't see to much. In the evening we were suppose to be able to see lava flowing down the side. They don't let people hike it anymore because some tourists and a guide died a few years back from gas inhalation because they got too close to the top.

My dad climbed a volcano in Guatemala in the 60's, and it started erupting while they were up near the top. He has the pair of shoes he was wearing when it happened... Rocks are melted into the soles. Pretty crazy.
