For years, I've made mental notes about all the things I wanted to do before I die.  Meanwhile, I've watched as social networks became the main way people log and catalog their interests online. Finally, decided it was time to get serious about creating a bucketlist site that worked the way I wanted it to work (yes, there are other ones out there, but none that seemed ideal for storytelling).

In early 2010, I purchased this domain and pulled out the laptop to get started. Today (June 2010), the site finally soft-launched in a form I could live with, though it still needs a fair bit of work.

I hope you enjoy using it as much as I enjoyed building it!

This was a great idea, perfect timing too because I've just started my Bucket List.

Scot Hacker on Jun 06, 2010

Glad you're digging it Hamda! Thanks.

Danny Morgan on Jun 08, 2010

great site! (great Django application)

Caitlin Josey on Oct 25, 2010

Thank you for doing this. Its great for ideas, keeping it organized and its fun to see what you've done that others want to do and share that experience.

Scot Hacker on Oct 25, 2010

Thanks Caitlin - it's been a super fun project. Lots more to do on the site, and great to see it growing!

Angela Leggo on Oct 30, 2010

I was walking down a Canyon in Peru with a new friend disscussing things on our Bucket Lists when I mentioned how great it would be to have a website where I could keep track of what I have and haven't done, steal ideas off other people and share stories...

No Joke two days later I get a message from my friend with a link to this site saying "Check this out, I think you're going to like it!" and sure enough, here was the exact site which I was imagining, with even better little applications then I wanted!

Cheers for making a killer site! I have had so much fun looking through all my bits of paper, napkins, word docs and mental notes creating a list on this site which I can share my adventures, get ideas and most of all keep track of my accomplishments!

Scot Hacker on Oct 30, 2010

Angela, it's so gratifying to read a comment like this! You're exactly the kind of life-loving adventurer this site is for. So glad you're digging it!

Have a great trek.

Mano13 on Nov 29, 2010

I'm so glad you did that site! I wanted to do a bucket list but didn't really knew where to begin with and your site helped me alot!! You're awesome! Thank you! :D

Scot Hacker on Nov 29, 2010

Thanks Mano! So glad you're digging it. Please let me know what kinds of improvements you'd like to see.

007 on Nov 30, 2010

This is a great site. I started my bucket list after watching the movie and upon my retirement I began completing items on my list. I look forward to seeing others as they approach and complete their list. Good luck to all and thanks Scott for the site.

dismantlerepair on Nov 30, 2010

As all the positive comments above suggest, this really is a brilliant idea. I started catalogging all of my dreams and accomplishments just over a year ago. But more than that, I wanted to document it with photos and souveneers not just for self gratification but so that I could show others how much having a bucketlist has influenced my life and how easy it is to accomplish your goals if you approach them one step at a time.

My squidoo lens was the home for this bucketlist, but upon discovering this site today I have started transferring it all over. If anyone is interested is seeing what I have achieved so far, take a look! squidoo.com/lifeofatwentysomething

Anyway, congrats on the site, i look forward to being inspired by the other users!

Rachel on Dec 04, 2010

Out of curiosity is there a facebook group or something like it dedicated to this site where we can talk to each other and find people to work on our lists together?

Scot Hacker on Dec 04, 2010

Hey Rachel - There is a currently unused Discussion section on our Facebook page (linked to from the sidebar), and you're welcome to use that. Though I always thought the comments section on each goal page here would be used for that purpose. What do you think would be the very best way to organize a system where people help each other with goals? (Sky's the limit - I'm taking feature requests).

Maud on Feb 15, 2011

I love your website! I started making notes on my Blackberry this weekend, when I figured there were too many plans in my head to remember them all. Called it my Emmerlijstje, which is a (very literal) Dutch translation of Bucket list. Then I found your site and it's exactly what I needed! So thanks. One of these days I'll make time to really put my bucketlist out there.

Scot Hacker on Feb 15, 2011

Thanks so much Maud - glad you're digging the site!

Rachel on Mar 02, 2011

Out of curiosity... Is there a way to find out who had completed something? For instance, I went to someone's list and clicked 'Read all of Shakespeare's works' and it said that there were 30 other people doing it. I clicked that and it popped up all the names. Do I have to click each name individually to find out who has completed it or not?

I hope that makes sense.

Scot Hacker on Mar 02, 2011

Great feature request Rachel. I can add a little marker to that list next to the ones that are completed. Thanks!

plc90210 on Mar 02, 2011

Another feature request: It would be really awesome if it was possible to prioritize your list and sort your goals by priority (high/medium/low).

Scot Hacker on Mar 02, 2011

Ray - That's already there! See the big blue Rearrange Your List button?

Rachel on Mar 02, 2011

Thanks Scot!!! It would really be appreciated!

Scot Hacker on Mar 02, 2011

All set Rachel - your feature request is live!

Rachel on Mar 03, 2011

Thank you!!! I absolutely adore you!

Siobhan Bamber on Mar 28, 2011

This site is amazing, I'm glad I found it. :)
I'm developing a Web application for my final year project at University so appreciate how much has gone into the development and design of this!
Did you build it entirely by yourself? You should be very proud! :)
I hope to be as competent a developer one day. In fact I'll put it on my Bucket List ha ha :)

Scot Hacker on Mar 28, 2011

Thanks Siobhan! Yes, this is all my own work, all built in Django. It's funny - people think we're a funded web startup, but this is just something I put together evenings and weekends over the course of a few months. Still needs a lot of work, but I've been busy for a while. Glad you're enjoying it!

Chris Harasta on Apr 06, 2011

Epic site! It really helps with my terrible memory.

Rachel on May 18, 2011

Do you know why it's not letting me rearrange my list? Is it something I'm doing wrong or...?

Scot Hacker on May 18, 2011

Hmm, interesting - something seems to be broken. Thanks for letting me know, I'll get this fixed soon!

Rachel on May 18, 2011

Thank you!

Scot Hacker on May 19, 2011

This has been fixed - sorry about that, and thanks for the report!

Scot Hacker on May 28, 2011

Thanks for the kind words Susan! Yeah, this site is a total labor of love - a platform for programming experiments, but also something to get my own butt into high gear and out doing things. So glad you're liking it and thanks for any promotion you can do!

Loved your list btw - it's highlighted on the site!

Mark Donahue on Jun 02, 2011

Great site, lots of fun to browse through ideas. I wish common ones could be together more because lots of people want to do the same thing but don't always use someone else's to copy so all the comments can be together.

Scot Hacker on Jun 02, 2011

Thanks Mark. We group goals together in two ways: By copying goals from others, or by using the same tags. At the database/logic level, I'm really not sure how we could group goals together any other way. But I'll think about it :)

Adam on Jun 02, 2011

This is a great site, I love reading all the storys that are in a persons bucket list, or seeing the pics. I hope to put some of my own up very soon

Nicolas on Jun 04, 2011

congratulations on putting this site together, it's an inspiration

Angela Sara Jimenez on Jun 06, 2011

WELL DONE! Thank you so much for building this. :)

I was thinking of creating an adventure blog (which is a lot of work) but this site met my needs. This site lets people rope up. We learn from each other that nothing's impossible.

You are simply brilliant!

Kelly on Jun 08, 2011

This website is so brilliant and has inspired me to create my own Bucketlist website that focuses on blogging about achieving my (many) life goals. Check it out if you wish! :)

www.bucketlistjunkie.com

Thanks for inspiring me to document my Bucketlist stories and to achieve my dreams! :)

Scot Hacker on Jun 08, 2011

@Kelly hmm, this site is here so people don't need to create similar sites elsewhere, but whatever floats your boat! Either way, best of luck with your bucketlist.

Natalie Aaron on Sep 13, 2011

I'm loving your site, since i stumbled across it i have visited it every day!!! Its given me the drive to complete more of my life goals!! Thank you!!

GuttersnipeRebecca on Nov 15, 2012

Thank you for the site. I think I looked up 2 others before comming here(to stay)I love this web site!! My list literally grows everyday. I find awesome things on here research them and find more things. I love that I can share what I have found my self and add picture. I made an account for 3 of my kids an they love it. They've came up with things I didn't even think of
Thanks :)

ZombieGirl on Nov 15, 2012

It was a great idea! I think everyone should have a bucket list or something close to one! I too have looked into other bucket list sites and this one is the best...may have stolen a few ideas from the other sites though =0 I come onto Bucket list almost everyday to add something or cross something off my list!

Daniel Griffin on Nov 15, 2012

Just to add my two cents, I agree with everything said before. This site is phenomenal. I really enjoy it and have to say thank you for making it. It's inspirational.

Scot Hacker on Nov 16, 2012

Wow, thanks you guys! It's so gratifying to have active and passionate users of the site. I'm only sorry I don't have more time to put into the site. However, that may change soon...

I hope all of you are able to cross all the items off your lists!

aliana corkindale on Mar 01, 2013

Ooh now I want to try your site! well done! please may you paste the link in a comment?

thanks

Jemma Bradaigh on Mar 01, 2013

I just want to add that I love this site, it's so addictive and great fun. I also had a 'mental list' but this is so much better and it all seems to be like minded people who use this. Big thanks to Scot!

Scot Hacker on Mar 01, 2013

Thanks Jemma! So glad you're enjoying the site - we're very proud of it.

missripley on Mar 01, 2013

Thanks from me also
Writing it down is helping me get off my arse and achieve things
Already have my bungee jump and shark swim booked for this year :)

Jemma Bradaigh on Mar 02, 2013

@missripley where are you doing your shark swim? That's on my list too! ;)

missripley on Mar 02, 2013

http://www.deepseaworld.com/shark-dives

It's inside but I have a massive fear of sharks!

Jemma Bradaigh on Mar 02, 2013

Oh I love deep sea world and I've thought about this but I'm not good at scuba diving. I think I would need a lot more practice. I'm worried that I would be more scared of the deep water than the sharks and not be able to go down deep enough to see the sharks lol! I diver there once told me that the sharks aren't aggressive and have never hurt anyone but sometimes the little fish bite them! I need to get better at diving cause I really want to do this!

missripley on Mar 02, 2013

I've never dived before either haha, they will train you on the day :)

aliana corkindale on Mar 02, 2013

where can i get the link to this site please? thank you and well done!

Jemma Bradaigh on Mar 02, 2013

@missripley my first ever diving lesson was a complete disaster. I had never been in the sea before because my mum passed her fear onto me. When I took that lesson I panicked so much they put me back on the boat! Lol. I am very slowly getting better at it though! I think it is because if you are scared your natural instinct is to head straight to the surface but if you are at a certain depth this is very dangerous and could even be fatal. Don't be put off though it's amazing but maybe try a scuba lesson in a pool first just to get a feel for it so you can make the most of your shark dive. Good luck with it! As soon as I know I've got my nerves in check I'm going to try this too. I'm going to try another sea dive when I go to Majorca in a few weeks ;)

missripley on Mar 02, 2013

@aliana - this is the site

missripley on Mar 02, 2013

I have a massive fear of the sea. If I manage the sharks ill try the sea :)

aliana corkindale on Mar 02, 2013

this is the site!?! whoops! this is amazing! i was trying to figure out what could top this

well done!:)

Angela Sara Jimenez on May 12, 2013

I can take a break from networking sites (yes, like Facebook hehe) but not this. Like others, I visit my list regularly especially when I need boost to keep going. The items I've accomplished and others that I need to scratch off give enough reason to more forward, be more compassionate to myself and see life as a cup half full. :)

Thank you so much for building bucketlist.org! You rock!!! ^___^
